Professor Erkin Şeker and Team Awarded NIH Grant

By Femi-Jide Akinmoladun

Please join us in congratulating Prof. Erkin Şeker (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and his collaborator, Prof. Pamela Lein (School of Veterinary Medicine), for receiving a National Institutes of Health R03 seed grant, titled "Neuronal Contribution to the Propagation of Inflammation in the Central Nervous System," funded by National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

Neuroinflammation plays a key role in numerous conditions, including degenerative diseases, cancer, traumatic brain injury, and neuropathic pain. This two-year pilot project will engineer and employ a microfluidic neural cell culture platform with embedded microelectrode arrays to provide insight into how inflammation spreads through neural tissue via histological and electrophysiological read-outs. The study is expected to facilitate rapid testing of therapeutics in managing neuroinflammation and its transmission to regions further away from the original site of injury or lesion.
