Professor Carolynn Patten Receives Highly Prestigious Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research & Development Award
Please join us in congratulating Professor Carolynn Patten for receiving a renewal of her Research Career Scientist (RCS) award from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Rehabilitation Research & Development Service (VA RR&D).
The Research Career Scientist status provides a career track and salary support for outstanding non-clinician scientists who have shown their commitment to VA research through scientific productivity, committee participation, teaching and mentoring, supervising of shared resources, and other important research-related activities in areas of high relevance to the Veterans Health Administration healthcare system in fulfillment of its primary mission of patient care. In addition to substantial VA service, eligibility to compete for Research Career Scientist status requires demonstration of at least 6 years of independent funding as Principal Investigator. Research Career Scientist awards undergo rigorous peer review.
The VA RR&D purview includes research relevant to the rehabilitative needs of Veterans. Only 2% of investigators across all VA research domains nationwide are awarded the prestigious RCS status. Professor Patten has continuously held national level peer-reviewed grant funding for 22 years. She was the first non-MD to receive a VA Career Development Award, supported by RR&D, which enabled her to establish a translational research program focused on human neuromechanics and neurorehabilitation.
