New Assistant Professor of Teaching Xianglong Wang, PhD

It is, perhaps, inevitable that Xianglong Wang was to become a new assistant professor of teaching at the UC Davis College of Engineering. He’s been teaching since grade school.

“In elementary school, I was already teaching,” he recalls. “My teacher handed me an hour around noontime so I could actually teach my classmates. Starting from that time, I have felt like teaching is a very rewarding job and it makes a lot of impact.”

Taking Neuroengineering by Storm

The UC Davis Department of Biomedical Engineering recently received a $3 million, five-year grant from the National Science Foundation to create a new graduate-level training program that stands to transform the field of neuroengineering. The grant is part of a larger effort by the Center for Neuroengineering and Medicine to promote neurological health and extend human capacity.

New Course at UC Davis: Introduction to Neuroengineering

Neuroengineering is an emerging field where engineering, medicine and neuroscience come together to engineer innovative tools to study the operation of the central and peripheral nervous systems and develop impactful solutions to treat their pathologies. Neuroengineers work across disciplines in highly-collaborative research projects to develop technologies such as prosthetics, brain-computer interfaces, deep brain stimulation and post-neural injury rehabilitation tools.

Caitlin Banks awarded Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Predoctoral Fellowship

Caitlin Banks, a Ph.D. student in Biomedical Engineering under the mentorship of Dr. Carolynn Patten, was recently awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Predoctoral Fellowship to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research. Her fellowship is co-sponsored by Dr. Carolynn Patten and Dr. Monica Perez.

At the Interface Between Robots and Humans

When Sarah O’Meara arrived at UC Davis she had little experience writing software and had never conducted an experiment involving human subjects. Now, the mechanical and aerospace engineering doctoral student has a passion for both and is on track for a career that combines them in her research on robots that could one day lend a hand to astronauts and others operating under challenging conditions.
